A Private Tuscan Island Retreat: The Formiche Islands
Every January, many of us kickstart the new year with brand-new goals and a lengthy to-do list (myself included). This year, however, I want to share a special place that invites you to slow down, look within, and power up from the inside out. I can’t think of a better spot to introduce to our TuscanDream community than the truly one-of-a-kind Formiche Islands. It’s a place that calls us back to our roots. When we cultivate inner peace, our entire reality shifts for the better, helping us reach our goals that much faster. Formiche is the perfect setting to spark that transformation.
I believe every travel recommendation should be rooted in firsthand experience. That’s why my team and I recently ventured to the charming Formiche Islands, a secluded private island resort off the coast of Maremma in Southern Tuscany, before sharing it with our clients.
A Lighthouse Turned Luxury Resort
The Formiche Islands in Tuscany are a group of three islets within the Tuscan Archipelago. The main island, Formica Grande, is the largest and the star in the group, hosting the Faro delle Formiche lighthouse, where the resort is located. Originally built in 1901 by the Italian Navy, this lighthouse has undergone careful renovations over the years, preserving its historical essence while introducing modern comfort.
Accessible by a 40-minute boat ride (or even a helicopter transfer) from the ports of Santo Stefano or Talamone, this completely private island remains unspoiled and serene. When we think of a resort, we often picture a sprawling complex bustling with tourists. Formiche Grande, however, is the polar opposite. Accommodating up to just four guests, this six-hectare (around 14 acres) island can be explored in about twenty minutes! Despite its intimate size, it offers all the modern amenities of a luxury resort.
A Sanctuary for Solitude and Inspiration
It’s the kind of place Elizabeth Gilbert (of Eat, Pray, Love) would have undoubtedly added to her personal quest for self discovery and healing if she’d known about it. That same spirit of solitude and inspiration permeates Formiche, where the lack of outside noise and the breathtaking coastal setting create a perfect environment for personal reflection and creativity. If you’re dreaming of writing your next bestselling novel, Formiche’s peaceful setting and complete absence of distractions offer the ideal space to let your thoughts flow freely.
Inside, you’ll find inviting spaces like a cozy living room furnished with island-inspired pieces and a small library of lighthouse-themed books, just right for an afternoon of quiet reading. A spiral staircase leads up to a sun-bathed terrace, while two double bedrooms each feature private outdoor lounges with sun umbrellas and loungers. From Wi-Fi and air conditioning to satellite TVs and a small bar, the amenities here will keep you connected to the outside world—if you still want to be!
A Marine Biologist’s Paradise
My personal highlight was diving into the crystal-clear Mediterranean waters. As someone with marine biology background, there’s nothing more exhilarating than encountering Formiche’s rich biodiversity, from vibrant fish to pristine underwater landscapes. With depths exceeding 70 meters, it’s a dream come true for diving enthusiasts like me, offering endless opportunities for underwater exploration.
Petite Luxury: Gourmet Dining
Not only do you forget about time on Formiche Islands in Tuscany, but you also forget the hassle of meal planning. A private chef curates fresh, authentic Tuscan flavors sourced locally from the surrounding sea and regional farms, from breakfast to dinner. Whether you opt for a multi-course feast or a simple day-trip lunch, the menu pairs beautifully with a selection of local wines. For those seeking unique experiences, consider a cooking class with the chef or a nature photography tour, both perfect for capturing the island’s breathtaking sunrises and sunsets.
When to Visit and What to Pack
Open from April through October, Formiche is best enjoyed with comfortable, smart-casual attire and sturdy footwear for navigating rocky shores. Don’t forget a swimsuit, hat, and a good book to enjoy in the resort’s hammock or by the pool, naturally heated to 38.7°C by the waters beneath the rock.
After experiencing this hidden paradise myself, I feel renewed and recharged, both physically and spiritually. Formiche is ideal for those who appreciate an authentic destination that hasn’t been groomed for tourism. It’s a haven where time slows down, nature takes center stage, and you can quite literally forget the days of the week as you connect with the rhythm of the sea and sky.
